The light affects the deeper layer of the skin only (dermis), and leaves the superficial layer of the skin (epidermis) untouched. Because IPL does not treat the skin surface, there is virtually no down time. Any part of the body can be treated. The most common areas are the face, chest, arms and the back of the hands. Facial treatments typically take approximately 45 minutes. Although most patients are aware of a slight sensation during treatments, unlike other laser treatments, a topical anesthetic is not required. A slight redness, like a windburn may be present for a few hours after a treatment, but makeup can be applied before leaving the office. Any pigments will come to the surface and slough off within 7 to 14 days and have a coffee ground appearance. Removing red and brown blemishes results in a beautiful, even complexion.
For best results, a minimum of 3 treatments, spaced 3 weeks apart are recommended. To avoid complications treatments should not be done on suntanned skin. Avoiding sun exposure after treatments is also recommended in addition to using a sunscreen with SPF 30 daily.
